How to Pack Fragile Items for a Move: Glass, Crockery, TVs and Frames

Step-by-step packing methods for glassware, crockery, TVs, mirrors, frames and electronics so they arrive in one piece.

Breakage is the most common worry on moving day, and most of it can be prevented by packing the right way. These methods are the ones professional packers use.

What you need

  • Strong double-wall cartons in small and medium sizes
  • Bubble wrap or foam sheets, and clean packing paper
  • Packing tape and a marker
  • Corrugated sheets or cardboard dividers for plates and glasses

Crockery and plates

  • Wrap each plate in paper, then stack 4 to 5 and wrap the stack again.
  • Pack plates on their edge, like records, not flat. They are stronger that way.
  • Line the bottom of the carton with crumpled paper and fill all gaps so nothing can shift.

Glasses and cups

  • Stuff paper inside each glass, then wrap the outside.
  • Use dividers if you have them. Put heavier glasses at the bottom and lighter ones on top.
  • Pack stemware upright with the stem wrapped separately.

TVs and monitors

  • Use the original box and foam if you still have them.
  • If not, cover the screen with a soft cloth, then bubble wrap, then a custom-sized cardboard frame.
  • Always carry and store a TV upright. Never lay it flat or stack anything on it.
  • Take a photo of the cable connections before unplugging.

Mirrors, glass tops and framed pictures

  • Stick masking tape in a cross over the glass. It will not stop a break, but it holds the pieces together.
  • Wrap in paper, then bubble wrap, and slide into a flat carton or between two sheets of cardboard.
  • Mark the carton "Fragile, this side up" and keep it upright.

Electronics and small appliances

  • Pack in the original box where possible. Bundle cables in a labelled bag and tape it to the device.
  • Remove ink, batteries and loose parts from printers and remote controls.

Label and load smartly

  • Write the room and "Fragile" on at least two sides of every carton.
  • Fragile cartons go on top of the load, never under heavy items.
  • Do not overload a carton. If you cannot lift it comfortably, it is too heavy.
