House Shifting Checklist: 30 Things to Do Before Moving Day

A good plan removes most of the stress. Use this checklist for your next home move.

2 weeks before

• Book your packers and movers and confirm the date in writing.
• Sort belongings. Donate or sell what you no longer use.
• Inform your landlord, society office and the new building about the move date and lift timings.
• Apply for address changes: Aadhaar, bank, gas, electricity (TNEB), broadband and insurance.

1 week before

• Start packing rarely used items.
• Take photos of electronics wiring and furniture assembly.
• Arrange parking space for the truck at both addresses.
• Defrost the fridge 24 hours before moving.

Moving day

• Keep documents, jewellery, cash and chargers with you.
• Do a walk-through of the home with the crew leader and check the inventory list.
• Keep a small box of essentials: medicines, toiletries, a change of clothes, a kettle.

After moving

• Check every item against the inventory and report damage the same day.
• Update your address on all your accounts.
