Address Change Checklist After Moving: Aadhaar, Bank, Gas, Electricity and More

A simple checklist of what to update after you move house in India, in a sensible order, with the documents you will need.

Updated 24 October 2026

The move is done, but your records still show the old address. Updating them in the right order avoids missed bills, rejected proofs and delayed deliveries.

1. Aadhaar first

Many other updates need a current address proof, so start with Aadhaar. You can update the address online on the official myAadhaar portal for a small fee, with a document such as a registered rent agreement, a recent utility bill or a bank statement. The update usually reflects within a few days. Check the current rules and fee on the official portal before you start.

2. Bank accounts, cards and loans

  • Update your address with each bank, credit card issuer and lender.
  • Do not forget insurance policies, mutual funds and investment accounts.
  • Ask for the updated address to be reflected on your statements, cards and cheque books.

3. Gas and electricity

  • LPG: apply to your distributor to transfer or register a new connection at the new address. Ask what documents they need.
  • Electricity: if you are moving to a new rented home, get the electricity connection transferred to your name or confirm how the bill will be shared with the landlord. Contact the electricity board or the landlord for the process.
  • Close or transfer the connections at the old home so you are not billed after you leave.

4. Government and ID documents

  • Driving licence and vehicle registration certificate: update the address with the transport office. Your vehicle documents should match your current address.
  • Voter ID, passport and PAN: update when you next need to use them, or sooner if they are part of an application.

5. Mobile, internet and OTT

  • Move or cancel your broadband and DTH connections.
  • Update postpaid mobile billing addresses.

6. Everyday services

  • Online shopping, food delivery and cab apps: update saved addresses.
  • Employer HR records, school records and your doctors.
  • Tell the post office or friends who still send letters to the old address.

Keep a folder

Keep copies of your rental agreement, sale deed, the latest utility bill and the Aadhaar acknowledgement together. You will need them more than once in the first month.
